Buffer Recognized as one of Quartz's Best Companies for Remote Workers 2021 

Social media management software Buffer released new Instagram engagement features to help small businesses better engage with their customers on Instagram today, the company already has features to help people schedule and analyze their social media posts. One standout element of these engagement features is that they automatically label comments related to questions or orders, and leverage machine learning to identify negative comments. 

Diego Sanchez, the Product Manager at Buffer who worked on creating this feature, explained “We talked to many small businesses and we kept hearing a common theme: It’s really hard to stay on top of comments on Instagram, and things tend to fall through the cracks.” He goes on to share more about the goal of these new features. “We wanted to help businesses stay on top of comments by adding smart labels to those comments.” 

Last year, Buffer retired the customer service product they acquired in 2015, which helped businesses deliver fast and responsive customer support on social media. In its place, they began building a more integrated set of social media engagement features that would allow small businesses to engage with their customers through Buffer. This is part of a broader stance that Buffer is taking to create a complete social media marketing tool for small businesses, emerging brands, and entrepreneurs. 

Buffer’s CEO, Joel Gascoigne, shared more on what the release of these features means for the future of Buffer. “Small businesses play a critical role in shaping innovation, providing truly meaningful work, and driving positive changes for local communities and society. We’re building Buffer with small businesses in mind, to give them the tools to do this important work. We’re now expanding Buffer to become a comprehensive social media toolkit, which will help our customers save time, get better results on social media, and see more growth.” 

These engagement features are now available to anyone with a Buffer subscription or trial and were added to existing pricing plans at no additional cost. Using Buffer’s engagement features, small businesses can quickly answer comments on social media without worrying about missing comments in the native Instagram app. Buffer also has a dedicated team to build out these features further, with a roadmap that includes expanding to other social networks.

Buffer Launches Engagement Features for Instagram 

For the fifth year in a row, Entrepreneur magazine has identified businesses that they determined are mastering the art and science of growing a business. To do this, they evaluate companies on five metrics:  impact, innovation, growth, leadership, and business valuation. Buffer is thankful to be recognized on the list for the second year in a row. 

This recognition comes shortly after Buffer surpassed $20 Million in  annual revenue and at a time when Buffer’s CEO Joel Gascoigne recently  described Buffer in a blog post as “a fundamentally different company.”  He goes on to explain that the company’s recent evolution and expansion  “has turned Buffer into a company with multiple products and as a  result, multiple revenue streams. Having several revenue streams is  setting us up to be a more sustainable, profitable, and long-term  company.”

Jason Feifer, editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine, elaborated on  the ranking by saying that "every entrepreneur knows that a healthy  business isn't just about growth.” He went on to explain, “it's about being well-rounded—growing your culture and your systems as strongly as  you grow your revenue. That's why we're excited to celebrate these  companies with our fifth annual Entrepreneur 360. The Buffer team has been actively working towards building out a full suite of brand-building products for businesses over the last few years. With their latest product Analyze, which was released in July of this year, they now offer three products designed to help businesses build their brand and connect with their customers online.

This expansion of Buffer’s offerings comes at a time when the company is close to being 8 years old, has just surpassed $20 Million in ARR,  and expects to reach $23 Million in ARR by the end of the year. It took the now 90-person team 6 years to reach $10 million and only 3 years after that to double it to $20 million. Buffer is in a unique position having spent $3.3 Million buying out a large portion of investors just last year while also having recently rebuilt their codebase.

Buffer Surpasses $20 Million In Annual Revenue, Expands Into Brand Building

Today Buffer released its third product, a standalone analytics platform called Analyze. Analyze supports social media managers in analyzing their performance on Instagram and Facebook. 

Analyze was first put into production in July 2017 and had their first customer while still in beta in February of 2018. At the time of launch, Analyze has more than 1,000 paying customers and is earning more than $500,000 in annual revenue. 

In a blog post written by Analyze Product Manager, Tom Redman he  shares that “Analyze’s revenue should match our expenses this year,  right around that $1M mark, and recoup its investment to date in the  next two years.”  

Analyze is Buffer’s third product, the second being Reply which was originally acquired as Respondly in 2015. This product launch brings the  company to achieve a vision set out by CEO Joel Gascoigne in 2017 to  turn Buffer into a “multi-product company.” 

Analyze’s features include allowing users to create reports on their performance in as few as two clicks as well as offering intuitive answers about the best day to post, the types of posts that perform best, and how often to post to maximize engagement.

In addition to now having three products, Buffer also has over 75,000  paying customers and recently surpassed $20 Million in ARR.
